Amazon has confirmed that digital subscribers to the New York Times Kindle edition will get free access to the newspaper’s website as part of their bundled content. The NY Times paywall – announced earlier this month and in operation since yesterday – is priced from $15 per month for web and smartphone access, but if you have a $19.99 per month Kindle subscription you’ll also be able to access the main site.
It’s worth noting that the Kindle edition of the NY Times can’t be read on Amazon’s Kindle apps – such as for iPad, iPhone and Android – only on proper Kindle hardware. No word on when exactly the bundled access will be enabled; Amazon says subscribers will be told more “in the coming weeks.”

As expected, Amazon has officially announced its online digital media locker, Amazon Cloud Drive, along with its streaming service, Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Amazon Cloud Player for Android. The Cloud Drive system allows music, video, documents and photos to be uploaded to Amazon’s storage, with 5GB available free (and 20GB if you buy an album from Amazon MP3); Cloud Player then streams MP3 and AAC (including DRM-free iTunes tracks) to PC/Mac, mobile devices and tablets.
One advantage is that Amazon does not require users to actually purchase their digital content in order to store it online. However, if you buy your music from Amazon MP3, keeping it on Cloud Drive won’t count against your overall limit.
Streaming is done at the original bitrate of your files, which means – if you have the bandwidth – high-quality tracks should still sound the same, and you can buy additional storage from $20 per year (see gallery for details). Apple and Google are expected to launch similar services themselves, but Amazon at least gets its offer out of the gate first.

Lasers destroy missiles, missiles shoot down satellites, and soon, satellites may tell both where to aim, as the United States successfully managed to track an entire ballistic missile launch from “birth-to-death” with its prototype Space Tracking and Surveillance System. After a year and a half in orbit, two Northrop Grumman-built satellites managed the feat last week, in what the company’s calling “the Holy Grail for missile defense.” While we’re not reading about any plans to mount any lasers on the satellite’s… ahem… heads, Space News reports that the US Navy will attempt to relay the satellite tracking data to its Aegis ships with interceptor missiles on board, and hopefully obliterate incoming projectiles with the extra range and reaction time that satellite coordinates afford. The Navy has reportedly scheduled its first game of space-based Missile Command for next month.
Earlier today a U.S. District Court in New York rejected Google’s book settlement with the Authors Guild and Association of American Publishers. The Amended Settlement Agreement (ASA) allowed Google to scan whatever books it wanted and index them online.
Judge Denny Chin felt that “the ASA would give Google a significant advantage over competitors, rewarding it for engaging in wholesale copying of copyrighted works without permission, while releasing claims well beyond those presented in the case.” The ASA was proposed in 2005 and a settlement was first reached in 2008. However, there were plenty of objections to the settlement.
“Certain objectors oppose the ASA on antitrust grounds, arguing that (1) certain pricing mechanisms would constitute horizontal agreements that would violate the Sherman Act; (2) the ASA would effectively grant Google a monopoly over digital books, and, in particular, orphan books; and (3) such a monopoly would further entrench Google’s dominant position in the online search business,” wrote Judge Chin.
Naturally, some of the objectors to the ASA were Google’s competitors like Microsoft and Amazon. There were a host of other problems and objections like privacy issues and violations, objections from certain authors about adequate representation, and difficulties with foreign laws.

Google may have seen its Chrome browser come through Pwn2Own unscathed, but that doesn’t mean everything in the app is safe. The search giant has fixed a Flash Player bug which Adobe described as “critical”; however, other browsers will be forced to wait on Adobe’s own testing.Google jumped the queue because of its deal with Adobe over Flash integration in Chrome, getting early access to the latest builds including the bug-fixed version currently in the pipeline. Those not using Chrome could still fall foul of the exploit, which embeds a Flash file in an Excel document that, if opened on a PC, can open that computer up to hacker access. Adobe hopes to release a fix for Flash Player on other browsers this week

This controversial topic has been debated back and forth since it was first proposed in 2000 and then approved in 2005 only to be overturned in 2006 and once again reconsidered in 2007.
Opposition to the decision surprisingly came from both the Family Research Council (FRC) as well as the porn industry. The FRC believed that the TLD would help pornographers “expand their evil empires on the internet” while pornographers believed that it would lead to more censorship.
Companies, such as ICM Registry, which plans to sell the .XXX web addresses obviously welcome the decision but believe its for the good of minors and general online security. ICM Chief Executive Stuart Lawley stated that, “For the first time, there will be a clearly defined Web address for adult entertainment, out of the reach of minors and as free as possible from fraud or malicious computer viruses.”

We do not intend to become one.” Now, Page is looking to take a page out of the company’s history books to help steer Google in the direction he wants it to go. It’s not going to be an easy task, as he wants to bring the company back to it’s roots as a startup. But it’s going to be a big job, keeping the vigor and will of a startup when you’re running one of the most powerful companies in the industry is daunting.

The problem is that in many areas knowing where those EV charge stations are can be a big challenge. Google has a new Google Maps service that will help find those charge stations.
Google Maps now has the location of public charging stations in your area. To find the closest charge stations to where you will be you just need to search Google maps for “EV charging station near (your area)” and you can find all of the available stations easily. The catch is that not all of the charging stations available in an area may be listed right now.
Google says that the US DOE NREL is working to make data on public charging stations more available. As the NREL database is updated Google will update the database for Google Maps so the charging points can be found.

Google also photo annotations and links pertaining to the origin of the show, and gave you the ability to control how your accounts with each other – either publicly or privately through your profile in your account. new features rolled yesterday, which means you can much more of the contacts that you regretted friending first look. It works as easy as you might expect – after installation, you only see a link to a site in the block along with each search result, and you’ll also be able to unblock sites at any time if you’re a little overboard. What is most interesting is that Google says that they receive feedback from the expansion, and that it would consider its use as a possible signal for ranking search results to study.
