The tragedy in Japan is no laughing matter and to be sure that no jokes are made that might be seen to poke fun at the nuclear crisis in Japan after the earthquake and resulting tsunami, episodes of the Simpsons are being editing in some parts of Europe. Censors are removing references to any nuclear disasters or radiation from episodes and simply keeping some episodes from airing.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are all editing episodes to remove any jokes or references to disasters at the nuclear power plant where Homer “works.” A couple episodes of the show have already been pulled including episode 66 called “Marge Gets a Job” and Episode 346 “On a Clear Day I can See My Sister.”
Those episodes have jokes about meltdowns and other things having to do with the nuclear plant. In total eight episodes are being held back until the end of April and then they will be reviewed again to see if the jokes are appropriate. I would assume once the Japan crisis with the reactors is squared away Europeans would again get normal episodes.

It’s tough to read too much into this, but when  a couple of job applications hoping to bring on folks who can “radically improve how people interact with maps and location-based services,” we can’t help but take note. The outfit’s currently seeking a pair of full-timers to be labeled as iOS Maps Application Developers, and it’s honing in on applicants with “excellent skills in object-oriented software design and programming.” We’ve felt for awhile that Apple’s built-in Maps application wasn’t even comparable to Google Maps Navigation, but it could be time for that to change. Even now, iOS users need to fork out cash on a legitimate turn-by-turn app if they’re hoping to navigate with the iPod touch or iPhone, but we can only hope that these applications are hinting at a more full-fledged internal program for the software’s next major iteration.’Course, we’re sure TomTom would.

Lasers destroy missiles, missiles shoot down satellites, and soon, satellites may tell both where to aim, as the United States successfully managed to track an entire ballistic missile launch from “birth-to-death” with its prototype Space Tracking and Surveillance System. After a year and a half in orbit, two Northrop Grumman-built satellites managed the feat last week, in what the company’s calling “the Holy Grail for missile defense.” While we’re not reading about any plans to mount any lasers on the satellite’s… ahem… heads, Space News reports that the US Navy will attempt to relay the satellite tracking data to its Aegis ships with interceptor missiles on board, and hopefully obliterate incoming projectiles with the extra range and reaction time that satellite coordinates afford. The Navy has reportedly scheduled its first game of space-based Missile Command for next month.

Oh, and we should mention this involves snipping off a corner on your SIM card, and carriers tend not to like that. Our recommendation regarding this contraption? If you’re absolutely in the need of a carrier unlock and have the cash, proceed with caution. Otherwise, patience is your answer....

Brown Dwarf Star Not Hot Enough to Boil Water


In a new discovery that blurs the lines between stars and planets, astronomers at the University of Hawaii have found the coldest brown dwarf star yet, 75 light years from Earth. Surface temperatures of the star are only around 206 degrees F (or 97 degrees C). Brown dwarfs are sometimes called “failed stars” because they have the chemical properties of stars, but not enough mass to ignite nuclear fusion at their cores. The star, named CFBDSIR 1458 10b (and shown below in an artist’s interpretation), is part of a binary system in close orbit with another brown dwarf star.


The star has an estimated mass of only about 6 to 15 times that of Jupiter, and is the smaller and dimmer of the pair of binary stars. The star is so cold that it may even have a watery atmosphere with clouds. Though Jupiter is very cold, with surface temperatures around -236 degrees F, there have been “hot Jupiters” found that have surface temperatures up to 1000 degrees F. But the size of CFBDSIR 1458 10b is what classifies it as a star.

Study leader Michael Liu, astronomer at the University of Hawaii said, “Over the years there has been steady but slow progress in pushing the boundaries of finding the coldest stars. But with this latest discovery we have made a big leap forward—besting the previous record holder by at least 150 Kelvin [270 degrees F, or 150 degrees C].”

The faint infrared signature of the star was seen from the W.M Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, which are both located on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. But the star may not keep the title of “coldest” for very long. Astronomers with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope are now trying to confirm another cold brown dwarf that has surface temperatures as low as 86 degrees F.

CBS pulling some Showtime content from Netflix


I have only recently become a fan of Netflix streaming and I was glad to see that some of the shows I like from Showtime like Dexter were on the service. I missed several seasons of Dexter and was looking forward to catching up. If you enjoy the currently airing Showtime content on Netflix as well, CBS has some bad news for us.



The network, which owns Showtime, has announced that it will be pulling current Showtime content from Netflix. The Showtime content will be pulled from Netflix when the current content agreement between Netflix and CBS expires this summer. The only shows affected on Netflix are Dexter and Californication, which are still airing, so this won’t affect other Showtime programs that are no longer airing like Sleeper Cell and The Tudors.

CBS didn’t offer a comment on why it is pulling the shows from Netflix. A Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey said, “We’re perplexed by this. We have great Showtime shows available on our service, and we expect to continue with those shows. We have a very good relationship with CBS and all its channels.” The announcement that CBS would pull the shows came only days after Netflix announced that it would be airing a first-run show called House of Cards created by David Fincher.

According to a report by a Japanese news agency, a radiation monitoring robot, aptly named Monirobo, is the first non-human responder to go on-site following the partial meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The machine, which was developed by Japan’s Nuclear Safety Technology Centre to operate at lethal radiation levels, reportedly began work Friday, enlisting a 3D camera, radiation detector, and heat and humidity sensors to monitor the extent of the damage. A second Monirobo, used to collect samples and detect flammable gases, is expected to join its red counterpart soon — both robots are operated by remote control from distances up to one kilometer away. They join the US Air Force’s Global Hawk drone in unmanned surveillance of the crisis.

Traffic Intersection Powered By Footsteps Concept


A group of college students have designed a traffic intersection that harnesses the power of vibrations from passing cars and pedestrian’s footsteps. The designers, Ian Jaye, Jovan Popovic, and Patrick Houin based the design on piezoelectricity, which converts vibrations and movement into electricity. We don’t see the use of piezoelectricity very much nowadays but the technology has been around for 100 years.



The design makes for self-sustained traffic intersections complete with traffic lights, street lamps, and traffic cameras. Piezoelectric plates are layered under a hard rubber level, with reflective blue road marking tape sitting on top of it all to designate the crosswalks. The plates collect electricity produced from the vibrations of cars and pedestrians and feed it to lithium-ion batteries to power the traffic lights, lamps, and cameras.


They’ve even designed the traffic lights, cameras, and traffic posts as well. The posts double as street lamps with low-energy LED lights. They stay dark until the light sensors embedded trigger them to turn on. The traffic lights have low-energy LEDs as well, encased in a stamped aluminum shell and use anti-glare plexiglass. The traffic light will have redesigned symbols and four sides to regulate a four-way intersection. The camera is attached by a ring to each traffic post, allowing it a 360-degree view and a 180-degree vertical camera rotation and viewing angle. All three are powered by the battery pack stationed at the bottom of each posts.

Single Lens Creates Microscopic 3D Images


At Ohio State University, engineers have designed a new lens that allows microscopic objects to be viewed from nine different angles at once, creating a 3D image. There are 3D microscopes now, but they use multiple lenses or cameras to move around an object. The researchers at Ohio State claim that this new lens is the “first single, stationary lens to create microscopic 3D images by itself.” The lens looks a bit like a diamond, and is about the size of a fingernail. But unlike a diamond, its facets are slightly different sizes and different angles.



The lens is made from the thermoplastic material polymethyl methacrylate, sometimes called “acrylic glass”. The prototype lens was manufactured using a precision cutting machine, but the engineers said that it could be made much more cheaply using traditional molding techniques.


Researchers Allen Yi and Lei Li created the lens. Li first wrote a computer program to design the lens so that it could be used to image microscopic objects. Yi and Li then used a milling tool with a diamond blade to cut the shape from the thermoplastic material, shaving bits of plastic in increments of 10nm.

They installed the lens on a microscope with a camera looking down through the facets, and placed objects under the flat side. Each facet captured an image of the object from a different angle, and the images were combined on a computer to create a 3D image. The engineers recorded 3D images of the tip of a ballpoint pen (1mm), and a mini drill bit (0.2mm).

These lenses could be used in manufacturing microelectronics and medical devices, which now requires very complex machinery to view the tiny components as they are assembled. Li also sees an application for the medical testing industry, which is attempting to shrink devices that analyse fluid samples. Cutting tiny reservoirs and channels in plastic requires a clear view, and the depths must be carved with precision.

Li said, “For us, the most attractive part of this project is that we will be able to see the real shape of micro-samples instead of just a 2D projection.”

Ben Heck combines Xbox 360 and 70′s Atari


Man when I was a kid I spent a lot of time playing an Atari just like the one Heck used for his latest project. I was an Asteroids, Pac-Man, and Pole Position player myself. Heck took an Atari console from 1977 and integrated it into an Xbox 360 laptop system.



Atari was in with Heck for this build combing vintage old school gaming with the latest Microsoft game console. The finished product is a portable device with its own LCD and all. The custom enclosure was made with wood paneling and classic metal switches that any gamer around in the early days of the console will remember fondly.

“I was excited when Atari approached me to build this gaming system – it’s the most ‘Ben Heck’ type project I could possibly build,” said Ben. “It was a great experience taking consoles from two completely different eras and combining them. That’s what art’s all about!”

Supermoon Tonight


Tonight it’s a Saturday night. It’s going to be beautiful tonight. Huge moons everywhere. I mean, sometimes the moon might seem big because it’s low on the horizon and there’s a tree in the way or something, but that just doesn’t even hold a candle to what’s going on tonight. It’s what’s called the perigee of the moon’s elliptical orbit. That’s an antonym of apogee. But I digress, the perigee is the point in the moon’s orbit where it’s closest to the earth. That’s tonight, and it’s pretty much going to be a full moon. Technically, it’s not going to quite be a full moon here in the Northern Hemisphere, but what are ya gonna do?




This particular astronomical occasion, when the moon is both full and at it’s perigee, only comes on once every twenty years or so. The last time it happened was in March of 1993. While the perigee is about 50km closer to the earth, it’s still 356,577 km away. This does make a siginificant impact to the moon’s visual appearance here on earth. The light reflecting from our lunar companion is going to be brighter, and the apparent visual size of the moon is going to be larger by 14%. I’m going to be howling extra loud tonight.

Heliotropis - Solar-Powered Flower with Glass Petals


Energy crisis is one of the most discussed topics not only among politicians but designers as well. The latter often try to focus on aesthetic design of an eco-friendly device that would make people aware about the climate change issue. Having this in mind, Anthony Castronovo decided to design a beautiful solar-powered kinetic sculpture which was commissioned by Beth Deutch and Larry Rubin in Rumson.
Their creation, called Heliotropis, resembles a flower and is expected to be completed this year. The flower features built-in solar panels to gather energy from the sun. The generated electricity will be used to make the flower's glass petals move inward and outward.
The two designers are considering using ceramic and glass for their project. Currently they are deciding on the colors of the petals. The main idea of the sculpture is to motivate people to make use of alternative sources of energy.

Latest Invention: Hummingbird Robot Created by Japanese Scientist

According to a Japanese scientist, he managed to create a "hummingbird robot" able to flutter around in the air by using a fast wing motions. The robot has almost the size of a real hummingbird. It features micro motor and 4 wings that flap at a speed of 30 times per second.

Hiroshi Liu, the 46-year-old scientist who works at Chiba University east of Tokyo and specializes in creating robots based on real creatures says that his latest invention is able to turn up, down, left or right by making use on a special infrared sensor. The robot weights only 2.6 grams

Liu says that the robot can fly in a figure of 8 more stably than a real helicopter. He mentioned that he further plans to make his latest invention float at one point in mid-air. In addition, the researcher looks forward to mount a micro camera on the robot by March 2011, reports Physorg.com. 

Though little, the robot has cost Liu a stunning 200 million yen ($2.1 million). It could be used for various purposes like rescuing people from ruins, looking for criminals and even serving as a probe vehicle on the red planet. "First, we need to learn about effective mechanism from natural life forms, but we want to develop something to go beyond nature eventually," said the scientist.

It does not move, and certainly not to convert, but we’re not sure we would be anywhere near this jagged metal contraption ripped straight from the silver screen. a giant replica tank Megatron Transformers: Revenge not only looks like he can lead us astray, as so much flesh under his prickly occurred, reportedly weighs five tons and stands eight feet. It is said to be built entirely from scrap designer known as “a legend” – a title that we can imagine that few people now dare to question. We are not sure how much did he spend on this brilliant work, but we know the Megatron tank weighed more than 5,000 kg. If only he could take on Optimus Prime in the landfill Beijing Battle Royale.
