Lenovo ThinkPad W520 on sale now: Quadcore undercuts MBP by $550

Lenovo’s ThinkPad W520 mobile workstation has gone up for sale, with the 15.6-inch notebook priced from $1,449 with an Intel Core-i7 processor. Announced back in February, the W520 starts out with a 2.7GHz Core i7-2620M chip, 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA Quadro 1000M Optimus graphics, but $1,649 gets you the quadcore 2.2GHz Core i7-2720QM processor.

Options, meanwhile, include up to a 1920 x 1080 display (to replace the standard 1366 x 768 panel), up to 8GB of RAM, up to 500GB of regular hard-drive or up to 160GB of SSD, and both Bluetooth 3.0 and integrated WWAN. The regular model comes with a DVD burner, 6-cell battery and WiFi b/g/n.
The obvious comparison is Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro, recently updated with the same quadcore processor. That comes with more hard-drive space as standard, as well as a few other niceties, but also starts from $2,199.

Fujitsu LifeBook AH572 15.6-inch 3D laptop ships

If you are in the market for a new laptop and like the idea of 3D capability, Fujitsu is now shipping its latest notebook that might pique your interest. The machine is called the LifeBook AH572 and it has some really nice specs. The biggest feature is probably the 3D capability.

It uses passive 3D glasses and the 15.6-inch screen has an Xpol 3D filter on it. The screen resolution is 1366 x 768 and it has 400nits brightness. The notebook uses an Intel Core 15-2410M 2.3GHz CPU and has integrated HD 3000 graphics.
Fujitsu putts 4GB of DDR3 RAM inside the machine and it has 500GB of storage. Power for the rig comes from a 6-cell battery that will power the machine for up to seven hours. The notebook also has a 1.3MP webcam and can record 3D video. The AH572 sells for $999.

Acer Iconia Touchbook dual-display notebook gets North American pricing

Acer has officially confirmed pricing and availability for the Acer Iconia Touchbook, its dual-display 14-inch touchscreen notebook. The Windows 7 based twin-tablet will hit the US and Canada in April, priced at $1,199.99 US (or $1,199 CAD), packing an Intel Core i5 processor, USB 3.0, HDMI, WiFi b/g/n and a customized software suite.

That software suite includes a touch-based browser, a clippings app called MyJournal, a social network aggregator pulling in Flickr, Facebook and YouTube content, and various other digital media tools. There’s also an on-screen keyboard and gesture support, along with Gorilla Glass to protect both of the displays. RAM is 4GB as standard, as is a 640GB hard-drive and 1.3-megapixel webcam.
At last week’s UK launch event for the Iconia Tab W500, Acer told us that sales of the Iconia Touchbook – which has been on sale in the UK since mid-January – had been “good, for the £1,500 segment” but declined to give specific figures.

Appearing directly on the Acer Ring are a number of useful functions and tools, including Virtual Keyboard, Gesture Editor, Capture, Webclip, Windows Manager and Device Control. Tapping the desired tool’s icon brings it up for immediate use.

• The Virtual Keyboard gives users the ability to enter data and navigate in a familiar fashion. Combined with its touch capabilities, the Iconia Touchbook is a flexible and powerful tablet designed for maximum efficiency and productivity. When both palms are placed on the bottom screen, the virtual full-sized keyboard instantly appears. Adaptive typing and predictive text allows for quick data entry and minimizes mistakes. A numeric touchpad with handwriting recognition converts handwriting to text. The palm rest area can also be customized with any image on the computer – a company logo or a scenic background — so users can personalize the tablet even more.

• Gesture Editor is a simple and quick way to instantly launch specific applications, access favorite websites, or even to lock the computer with a simple finger motion. A set of pre-defined gestures is included, but customized gestures can be created in just five easy steps. For example, simply drawing a $ (dollar sign) on the screen can launch a financial or accounting application, or a v (checkmark) can open a to-do list.

• The Capture tool allows users to clip parts of an image (a photo, illustration or a webpage) and save it to the Scrapbook application for further editing. With the picture on the top screen and the Scrapbook page opened on the bottom display, users just tap the Capture tool, run their finger around the desired image and then tap the area to open a menu that will allow them to drag and drop it onto the Scrapbook page. They can then drag and drop the desired thumbnail onto the page, where it can be rotated or resized with pinching actions.

• The Web Clip tool is specifically for clipping parts of web pages to save to MyJournal. Tap the screen, select the area to crop, tap and drag on any of the corners of the selected area to size it, and then tap the area again to open a menu to paste the content into MyJournal, Scrapbook or copy it to the clipboard. It can also be saved as a bitmap file.

• Window Manager provides a touch-friendly interface for controlling the various open windows on the displays. Users can customize which screen the application appears on as well as its size.

• Device Control is an easy way to access and adjust power, display and volume settings, wireless connections and various devices connected to the HDMI, VGA and USB ports.

Clear.fi makes data sharing convenient in small office environment or the home

Acer Iconia Tab W500 and A500 tablets priced and dated

Acer has confirmed pricing and availability for several models in its Iconia Tab range, with a choice of Windows 7 and Android 3.0 Honeycomb slates to choose from. The Windows-based Acer Iconia Tab W500 will go on sale in the UK and Europe on April 8 2011, priced from £449 ($726) for the slate alone; if you want the optional keyboard, the bundle will cost £529 ($855).

Alone, the keyboard – which has an ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports and a trackpoint stick, but no integrated battery like ASUS’ Eee Pad Transformer – will be £89 ($144) which seems on the expensive side to us. A 3G-enabled version of the Iconia Tab W500 will also be on offer, priced at £529 ($855) without the keyboard or £579 ($936) with the keyboard. Acer tells us that they’re “far along” in talks with carriers regarding offering the 3G version of the slate on-contract.

Also on April 8, the Honeycomb-based Acer Iconia Tab A500 will also go on sale, priced at £449 as well. However, the 10-inch Android slate will not be offered with a keyboard dock, but instead a Bluetooth keyboard. Acer’s 7-inch Iconia Tab A100, which also runs Honeycomb, will arrive in mid-May, pricing yet to be confirmed.

iBuypower offers three new Battalion 101 gaming notebooks with Sandy Bridge

iBuypower is a boutique maker of gaming notebooks and desktop computers. The company has announced that it has three new gaming notebooks in its Battalion series that all use Sandy Bridge processors from Intel. The new machines include the Battalion 101 P151HM1, W150HNQ, and W170HN with pricing for the rigs starting at $899.

The P151HM1 is a 15-inch notebook that packs in a GeForce GTX 460M video card, 4GB of RAM, 500GB of storage, and the screen has a 1920 x 1080 resolution for $1,119. The W150HNQ is very similar except it uses a GT540M GPU and the screen has 1366 x 768 resolution with prices starting at $899.

The big screen offering is the Battalion 101 W170HN notebook. This machine has a 17.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a GT540M GPU. Pricing starts at $1019 for this gaming notebook. All three of the machines use the Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU.

Review: Apple supercharges the 17-inch MacBook Pro for 2011 with the latest Intel Core i7 processors, ATI Radeon HD graphics, and Intel Thunderbolt connectivity.

Steve Jobs may have waxed poetic about the “post-PC” age at the recent launch of the iPad 2, but as the most recent revamp of the MacBook Pro shows, Apple’s expertise at crafting a laptop remains as sharp as ever. While the MacBook Pro retains the same look and feel Apple has been milking for years, the addition of faster processors, graphics and Intel’s brand new Thunderbolt interface all put more zip beneath the outstanding unibody design. You may have to refinance your house to afford one, but once it’s in your hands, there’s little the folding powerhouse won’t do.

Features

Apple still offers the MacBook in 13-, 15- and 17-inch variants. We tested the 17 incher, which starts with at least a 2.2GHz Core i7 and AMD Radeon HD 6750 graphics, making it a brute even in its standard configuration. (At $2,499 and up, it should be). For graphics gurus and multi-taskers, the centerpiece of the desktop replacement model comes courtesy of an LED-lit, 17-inch LCD screen with 1920 x 1200 resolution, available in glossy or antiglare. Ours also came equipped with a 750GB Toshiba drive spinning at 5400RPM and of course, the new Thunderbolt interface.

Design

At first glance, the new MacBook Pro looks and feels exactly like the previous version. Come to think of it, it does on second glance, too. Apple has stuck with what works and left the clean, unibody design of the MacBook Pro stand unmolested for 2011.

Our old cheers and jeers still stand. Apple’s aluminum unibody chassis feels like you could park a truck on it, but can still get a little chilly on the forearms, and the sharp 90-degree angles around the edges dig at your wrists. (You might not notice either problem if you wear long-sleeve turtlenecks every day.) Still, for sheer aesthetic value and build quality, the MacBook Pro remains at the top of the pack this year.

At 6.6 pounds at 15.47 inches long, you really won’t find yourself anxious to transport the MacBook Pro any further than the jaunt between couch and desk. But it holds its ground relative to other 17-inch notebooks. HP’s 17-inch ProBook 4270s, for instance, starts at 6.51 pounds, and Toshiba’s Satellite L670 hovers just around 6.6 depending on how it’s equipped. Dell’s Vostro 3700 does come in significantly lighter at 5.95 pounds, but measures 1.35 inches thick to the MacBook’s relatively slender 0.98 inches.

Keyboard and trackpad

Apple’s Chiclet-style keyboards succeed at delivering the clean, minimalist aesthetic the company is known for, and the standard backlight is certainly a boon for night owls, but we’ve never cared for the soggy-feeling key presses. We’re also boggled by why Apple chose to make the keyboard so narrow, shortening important keys like delete and omitting a number pad, when there’s so much room. The chassis spans a lengthy 15.47 inches wide, but the keyboard only occupies 10.75 inches. Sure, Apple used the space for the speaker grilles, but they could have easily been shuffled elsewhere.

Fortunately, the trackpad takes the opposite approach, casting a huge patch of finger-friendly glass over much of the area below the keyboard. Traditionalists may have to take some time to adapt to Apple’s buttonless design, which allows the whole pad to click, but we prefer it in the long run, especially combined with multi-touch gestures for options like right clicking, going forward and back, and Expose.

Toshiba’s Mobile LCD Monitor For Under $200

And the race is officially on to be the king of USB powered monitors with Toshiba in the Lead. We’ve already seen several extremely portable secondary monitors debuted this year but Toshiba’s new Mobile LCD model is by far the most impressive—partially because it only costs $200.

For that price you might not be expecting much but surprisingly the 14 inch monitor stands up to the hordes beating down the gates. It comes equipped with a 1366 X 768 display with 200 nits of brightness. In addition the 16 millisecond refresh rate is enough to keep anybody happy.

The device is 100% compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP and all you need is a single USB cord for power and data transfer—no more hunting for a spare outlet or overloading your current surge protector. And if you simply must chain yourself to an outlet, Toshiba offers an optional AC adapter as well.

And when I said this thing was portable, I wasn’t kidding. It only weighs 2.8 pounds. That’s quite a feat in and of itself.

One neat feature that’s just the cherry on the top of the sundae is the “hybrid” carrying case that comes standard. Not only will it protect your modest little investment but it doubles as a kickstand so you can display your new Toshiba Mobile LCD monitor anywhere.

MSI GT680 Gaming Laptop Review: Strong at 720p, battery life

MSI GT680R calls fastest gaming laptop of this world.

Toshiba announces Mini NB305 and NB505 Netbook

Who said that netbooks and tablets can not live in harmony? Toshiba doesn’t give up on the netbooks, In addition to his unnamed tablet, Toshiba has brought along two 10.1-inch Netbook at CES.

The Toshiba Libretto

Toshiba Libretto W105 is a napkin-sketch of concept suddenly brought to life. What if they made a sign with – wait for it – two screens How terrible it would be “Of course, no one expects large companies to produce such weird, ballsy device for except, perhaps, for a limited trial in the Convention, has never seen. But Toshiba went ahead and actually did it.

Dual-screen concept is not entirely new. Nerds hardcore gadget will mourn the lost Microsoft Courier, dramatically innovative two shielded pills from an aesthetic, as inspired by Moleskine, as the iPhone. Courier was canceled shortly thereafter was found, for unclear reasons. Other companies, in particular, Acer and Asus, have proposed concepts or prototypes, and then there is a massive textbook replacement Kno (two 14-inch screens!), To be released in the end …. One low-budget company has released dual-screen device in which one screen E-Ink, other Android tablets, although one that used it, it seemed both parties very much.

I did these things because the libretto is nice, irrevocably, inevitably unique, and fun. This limited edition device and it should be, at the price frankly ridiculous $ 1100. But! If you see this thing in the wild, demo, the dusty Best Buy face or on the coffee table from the undiscerning and high material gadget nerd, pick it up. Play with it. Within five minutes, ten minutes, an hour, he gleefully fun, amazingly bold. This is the best of the new winner for its sheer stubbornness. This is totally futuristic – one of the most interesting gadgets I’ve taken throughout the year.

Acer AMD Fusion powered laptops

We do not have complete information, but Acer has just released three new notebook Aspire, equipped with APU Fusion AMD.

In the first place, 10.1-inch Aspire One 522 – we have seen – AMD C-50 APU, AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics and supports 1080p video output with HDMI. 10.1-inch WXGA screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and other features include Wi-Fi and LAN, as well as optional Bluetooth or 3G. Aspire One 522 will come in green or black. No word on pricing or availability yet. Two other deals announced Acer Aspire 5253 15.6-inch and 14-inch 4253. These bad boys feature E from AMD series expedited processing unit and the motor Vision. Aspire 5253 can pack up to 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM, as well as laptops come with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. No price or availability of this information yet, but we’ll let you know when we’re doing.

Sony provides customizable VAIO S laptops

CES announcement that the Sony VAIO S was given a number of new silicon, it appears that more changes in the ultra-portable PC on the road. the company’s blog, you can now configure the system, rather than buying at the counter. Not all options are so numerous as we want (color limited to black or silver), but you can choose Blu-Ray recordable drive, 512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 310 graphics card (including, but choosing this option means you know what WIDI a) to 256 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM.

HP Clarifies Plans To Expand WebOS On PCs

Some have been wondering what HP meant during its “Think Beyond” event when launched a slew of webOS based devices and announced that it would “drastically expand” its webOS platform beyond smartphones and tablets. There was speculation that this meant the near future involved HP replacing Microsoft Windows on its laptops and desktops with webOS. However, HP clarified that this wasn’t the case and that instead they are seeking an improved integration of webOS with Windows.

“There’s a huge user base that still wants the [Windows] PC, “ said HP Chief Technical Officer Phil McKinney in an interview with The Seattle Times. “The key is that even on their PCs, people want to have it integrated with their devices. We have our PCs, you have your pads, you’ve got your phones. How do they work together? In today’s world they all act as individual information islands. What webOS does is bring all that together.”

They won’t be bringing integration through virtualization. HP wants to develop webOS apps that will combine all your devices together into a unified and smooth experience. So webOS is not replacing Windows on PCs, but rather, more fully integrating with it. They plan to eventually have this webOS integration consistent across all of their PC-based products.

Toshiba Dynabook Qosmio T750 laptop with a lid that changes color

Toshiba has come with a laptop, Dynabook Qosmio T750, which has a lid which changes colour, the first of its kind, the Japanese giant has claimed.

We have a laptop with a monochrome display was used – it was a huge white block thing, not to be missed – just turn on every laptop we use today to find the back who stubbornly refuses to change color regardless of the light that hits it. Is this a problem? Samsung seeks to crown of Apple laptop and projects 60-percent increase in notebook sales in 2011

Samsung seeks to take share of all iProducts For many years, and it seems the company is currently shooting with a MacBook from Apple to steal the thunder in 2011.

Sammy ten million notebooks sold in 2010 – but less than 150.000 Jobs & Co in the first nine months of this year – and reportedly plans from sixteen to seventeen million portable drive in 2011. This is a huge increase in sales, but the Korean company 9 Series is a testament to what must come, we can not say that this is totally unrealistic. Or are they more than product Apple has not yet determined, but given his reputation for Q4 profit, there is no indication that the Cupertino crowd to slow down in the near future. Game, guys.

MSI announces CR650 with AMD E-350 Zacate APU

There is no doubt that the new platform, AMD Fusion Zacate pretty killer when it comes to ultraportable or notbook

but there is no reason, affordable, solid-performing APU can power budget of 15.6 – System , is not it? Well, that certainly is the way to a few notebook suppliers. In the footsteps of Toshiba Satellite C655D, MSI has decided his 15.6-inch CR650 with the latest MAT Fusion AMD. Zacate equipped with E-350 with the Radeon HD 6310 graphics on a single chip (the same chip in HP dm1 we just revised), there is no doubt it can record Full HD and light gaming system without hiccups. We do not drool over the design, but has no basis, including of DVD, six-cell battery, HD webcam and speakers SRS sound exceeds demand. It will also be configured with 250, 320 or 500 GB hard drive and RAM DDR3. There is no word on pricing yet, but we believe that should call for less than $ 600 when it finally hits the shelves.

Acer Aspire One 522 Netbook With AMD Fusion, 1080p Out Made Official

Acer has been announcing a whole slew of different products at this year’s CES and it doesn’t seem they are looking to slow anytime soon. The latest announcement from the company is the Aspire One 522 netbook, pictured above.

The Aspire One 522 features a 10.1-inch display with a 1280 x 720 resolution and packs an AMD Fusion C-50 processor clocked at 1GHz. Also on board is a Radeon HD 6250 GPU with 256MB of built-in RAM which Acer says will help the netbook pump out full HD 1080p video content with its built-in HDMI port. Additionally, the Aspire One 522 features up to 2GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, optional 3G and up to 250GB of storage. But that’s not all, it also features a webcam, 3 USB 2.0 ports, VGA, ethernet and audio in/out.

Acer says the netbook also features a 2200mAh battery for 3 hours of juice or a 4400mAh battery rated for 6 hours. Unfortunately, there is no word on pricing or a North American launch but Acer assures us the Aspire One 522 will be dropping in the UK sometime during Q2 of this year.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 12.5-inch ultraportable

The Chinese laptop manufacturer has always had a certain knack for creating very powerful and well-rounded ultraportables.

Lenovo â€™s IdeaPad U260 interesting new chassis with a 12.5-inch screen, 3.04 pounds and 0.71-inches thick. Clearly aimed at the mobility without an optical drive, ULV Core i3/i5 processors, and the only option 4-cell battery. Some features are under threat, though, with only two USB 2.0 ports and an ExpressCard slot no. There are no details on the establishment of 4-cells, but Lenovo calls within 4 hours. There is only one SO-DIMM slot for memory cards, although there may be some RAM soldered directly to the motherboard for total 4GB system memory.

Rounding out the list of specifications is a Bluetooth, WiFi BGN, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD on each model. Being IdeaPad, you get a choice of colors in the form of Mocha Brown and Clementine Orange. I’m not so fond of brown, but orange can be harsh.

It should also be noted that the 12.5-inch HD-resolution display is available only in non-reflective finish, a nice change from the usual glossy displays only the consumer notebook. Video output via VGA and HDMI outputs, it’s nice to see two exits, Lenovo is not trying to cheap on this.

As for prices, we have no word just yet. Given the slim chassis, lightweight, and are composed entirely of magnesium alloy, aluminum, and it will not be bottom of the barrel machine. Add to Core i3 and i5, and this will be $ 1000 (USD) range.

Alienware M17x notebook is said to be suffering from power issues with the GPU

It looks like at least some of the Alienware M17x laptop owners simply can not catch a break. Although the previous so-called DPC latency issue, apparently, was finally settled, the number of users are currently reporting an issue that only becomes apparent after the earlier problem was fixed.

As it turned out, the symptoms are similar to the stuttering caused by DPC latency issue (hence the confusion), but new problems blamed on energy issues – namely, that the GPU requires more power than a laptop can provide. Even worse, it seems that those who ended the configuration are the most likely to experience problems, since they effectively Maxing out already exceeded the system. For its part, Dell, apparently fixed the issue in the latest revision of the notebook, but users on the forums Notebook Review reports that the company has not exactly tried to dish out replacements for all the victims (who, it seems only right to “fix” available).
